Winter has struck Northern California with its full cruelty. This shot was taken a couple of days before Christmas while visiting a friends house. Notice one of the trees has even lost its leaves due to the cold. We were unable to wear T-shirts for more than an hour of midafternoon sun. This week we have been terrorized by a drizzle which makes the ground look wet, yet mysteriously does not wash the cars. Canon EOS 5D.

We have a couple of volunteer acacias gowing in the yard in Phoenix. This little one in the back will have to come out; its chosen a spot too close to the foundation. These are the real deal, African style, with hundreds of enormously long, sharp thorns. They do well in the hot desert climate and you see lots of them. When more mature, they bloom in a profuse cloud of tiny yellow blossoms. Nikon D70.

the remnants of tropical storm Javier arrived in southeastern Arizona, as a kind of monsoon storm, with thunderstorms, high winds and heavy rains. Severe weather alerts were issued for the whole area. You only had to look out the window to see why.

Objects may be closer than they appear. The photo you see here was originally a medium-telephoto JPG taken with the Canon EOS 5D and a 200mm lens. The original was shot on May 24, at f7/1 and 1/500 at 4368×2912 pixel resolution, hand-held. This lens is image-stabilized.

This office plant extreme close-up was photographed early this morning with a Canon 100mm Macro fixed lens, indoor fluorescent lighting, at 1/41 second f2.8 ISO-200.

Nothings really spectacular about this photo: decent composition, but just another tree. While in college, I planted a lemon seed (from a store-bought lemon) in a little pot of soil in 1970. You can actually sprout them, but folks say they will never bear fruit. I toted it in its cramped plastic pot to a friends house where I rented a room, and shared those wonderful first years of working in the real world. Then I moved on. While visiting this weekend, at the same house, my friend said, do you remember that little lemon tree you brought from Sacramento Street? Here it is, bearing its first fruit too, after 38 years. Mount St. Helens from the air. This image is one of several shot on a flight from Seattle to Medford, Oregon aboard a Bombardier Q400 regional turboprop, operated by Horizon Air. We flew right down the Paciifc Ring of Fire. The air is severely hazed by smoke from the 14,000 June-July 2008 wildfires currently raging in Northern California.

The tops of these saguaros are over 20′ aloft - This keeps the cats at a safe distance. When the saguaro is in bloom, its rich fruit provides birds like this dove a plentiful source of food. I’m not sure who is hovering to the right of the cactus. Shot June 9 with a Nikon D70 and 300mm telephoto.

This is the blue-violet traffic lane divider strip plant so common in California gardens. You can see from the internet resources that it is Agapanthus, or African Lily. I called it amaryllis all my life and you can blame my parents for that but it is not hard to see why there could be confusion. They all appear to be part of the lily family.

European Starling. After almost a year of trying to identify this bird in our Arizona back yard, we determined - with much help from our friends?on the astronomy forum?Cloudy Nights - that it is the common European Starling. A few of you have no doubt followed our almost obsessive quest to ID this elusive bird. Last year, we had nothing to go on but its call, which sounds something like a party whistle or Spike Jones sound effects - hence our Pop Slider nick name.

California-Arizona desert enroute Phoenix. Leica C-LUX 2 mini digital 11/30/07, f5.6, ISO 100, focal length 16.4mm. At 30,000 feet just before sunset, headed for the rainshowers to the east over south central Arizona, the incredible haze and water vapor load in the atmosphere has just about totally obscured the surreal landscape. If you peer closely at the foreground terrain below, youll see what appears to be a circular crater some miles in diameter.

We dug in a potted Lantana (Golden Sunrise) and some Lobelia, back in July. I took a couple of photos. I liked this best because the loss of foreground focus gives a diffuse effect to remind us of sunny, balmy summer days.

We stayed in the New York New York hotel in Las Vegas for a couple of days. The view was spectacular from the 19th floor, but the windows are heavily tinted. I did not think this one would come out, but it is interesting. The scene is shot to the east in late afternoon with a Sony DSC-S85.

Helicopter. This photograph was shot with the 70-300mm Nikkor lens I also bought with the D70s. Exposure was at full 300mm zoom, 1/400, F/5.6, auto-ISO. This was a lucky shot as you do not get a lot of time with choppers passing overhead, I would guess, at about 1000 feet.

This is the promised photo of the north flank of Mount St. Helens. Spirit Lake is the farther of the two lakes captured here. The image has been adjusted in PhotoShop to filter out as much of the CA wildfire haze as possible. The light tan areas were blasted by pyroclastic flow and still look barren and lifeless.
